Mediterranean Revival Styles

A Mission Style Firehouse

Opened in 1918, this Mission Revival fire station served the growing East Dallas neighborhoods of Junius Heights and Lakewood. It was designed by H. A. Overback, a noted Dallas architect. Mission Revival was adapted for apartments, retail buildings, and even automotive service stations during its heyday. The Southern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads built their train stations in Mission Style in order to create brand recognition.

This is Fire Station 16, built in 1918 at 5501 Columbia. Clay roof tiles are combined with an arched parapet and the simple triangular roof supports often associated with the Arts & Crafts style. Dark red brick like this was often used on Mediterranean style buildings in Dallas, instead of the stucco and plaster finishes which were technically more appropriate to the style.
